Level 2 Award In Manual Handling - Principles And Practice

Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, employers are required to take appropriate steps to reduce the risk of injury to employees.

Designed for

All employees who have to carry out any manual handling activities at work, including both industrial and office workers. 

Outline

This qualification, aimed at those who carry out manual handling at work, provides essential information about manual handling hazards and their control. 

To give you maximum flexibility it can be delivered as a half-day programme for learners who only wish to gain the CIEH Level 2 Award in Principles of Manual Handling. Those who need to learn about practical manual handling techniques should stay on for a further half-day training session and assessment to gain the full CIEH Level 2 Award in Manual Handling - Principles and Practice.

Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, employers are required to take appropriate steps to reduce the risk of injury to employees:

  • This includes suitable training. The CIEH Level 2 Award in Manual Handling.
  • Principles and Practice combines both the theoretical and hands-on elements of the subject and teaches learners techniques to lift, carry, push and pull objects safely within their individual capabilities.

Aims and Objectives

  • Identify and understand the risks associated with manual handling.
  • Learn the value of risk assessment and how to apply it.
  • Make recommendations to manage risks.
  • Apply the principles of safer handling to a range of everyday manual handling tasks.

Content

The programme covers the following topics:

  • Manual handling hazards, risks and controls
  • How manual handling operations can cause injury and harm
  • The scope of legal requirements and where guidance can be found
  • The process for assessing manual handling risks
  • The value of risk assessment and how it applies to safe manual handling practice
  • Manual handling techniques – lifting loads from low levels/working at low levels/lowering from height/pushing loads/pulling loads/carrying/team handling

Duration:

  • Half-day programme (Principles - am).
  • One-day programme including practical session (Principles and Practice - pm).

Entry requirements

We recommend the Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace or equivalent. 

The CIEH Principles of COSHH qualification complements the CIEH Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace by introducing the inherent risks in substances and the controls available.

Assessment

Multiple choice examination.

Successful participants will be awarded a CIEH certificate.

The CIEH recommend refresher training every 3 years.

You can study by attending a classroom course, involving face-to-face teaching which can be organised as an in-house course in your premises if you have a number of students who need this qualification.
