The Client

Brainkind is the UK’s leading charity helping people to thrive after a brain injury. They provide innovative rehabilitation and ongoing support to ensure life after a brain injury can be a life well lived.

Formerly known as The Disabilities Trust, Brainkind has been supporting people with life-changing brain injuries for over 40 years. Their workforce ranges from physiotherapists to specialist carers, and although they’re based in West Sussex, their support network operates across the UK.

The Brief

Amy Manto-Wardell, the Learning & Development Business Partner, together with the Health and Safety team at Brainkind, was looking to equip their Management and Maintenance teams with the skills to identify risks and carry out risk assessments while on the job.

The Solution

After chatting with Amy, it was decided that the IOSH Managing Safely course was the right level of training for Service Managers to give them a good depth of understanding of health and safety risks for those who have responsibility over others.

We discussed a range of different delivery options and it was decided that blended learning using a combination of the virtual classroom and e-learning courses would be the best approach, as Brainkind was looking for a route that would accommodate a range of job roles and allow flexibility.

The course was structured to allow the first cohort access to the IOSH Managing Safely e-learning course two weeks before a scheduled virtual training session with a tutor. The learners completed the first three modules of the syllabus online at their own pace, and then joined together to attend a one-day virtual classroom course over Zoom where they could discuss what they had learned so far, cover the remaining topics on the syllabus, participate in mock assessments with tutor feedback, and ask any questions. Following the virtual classroom session, learners would then use the e-learning course to revise and complete the assessments.

The assessments for this course are a multiple-choice assessment that is completed online, and a risk assessment based on the learners own workplace to be submitted in the weeks after, to help them apply their newfound knowledge in a practical way.

The Result

We were able to help keep learners on track and keep Brainkind up to date with their progress by producing regular reports through our custom e-learning platform, Ottis.

By the end of the agreed period, all delegates had passed their assessments and achieved their IOSH Managing Safely qualification. The blended learning approach proved to be a success for both Brainkind and ACT, and we have since gone on to help five further groups of Brainkind learners to achieve their qualification using this method.

“The experience for us as an organisation has been very positive with a high level of completion rates. ACT are on hand for any queries or concerns and their turnaround for answer queries is very quick. As an organisation I would highly recommend ACT for your training needs.”
