Emergency First Aid At Work

The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is recognised under Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. 

The employer is expected to conduct a first aid needs assessment.  In circumstances where this shows an Appointed Person would not be sufficient and a first aider trained to the level of the First Aid at Work (FAW) course (sometimes called Qualified First Aider course to distinguish people who hold this award from those that hold the Emergency First Aid at Work award) is not required.  The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course may be adequate.

Designed for

This course is ideal for individuals who wish to gain knowledge of emergency first aid procedures and
obtain a recognised qualification in first aid.  This first aid course is applicable, if you have determined that your organisation needs one of more trained First Aider that requires the level of training provided by the HSE approved Emergency First Aid at Work course (EFAW).

Candidates must be 16 years or over and physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the course content.


The First Aid at Work course is designed to provide a good basic knowledge of first aid sufficient to respond to expected emergencies in low risk workplaces.  The course will give you the confidence and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies.

Certification is valid for a period of 3 years.  To maintain the qualification a 2 day Refresher course must also be undertaken at the end of the 3 year period.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is that delegates will have an understanding of emergency first aid and be able to undertake emergency first aid procedures in the workplace.

On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:

(a) understand the role of the first-aider including reference to:

(i) the importance of preventing cross-infection,

(ii) the need for recording incidents and actions,

(iii) use of available equipment.

(b) assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency.

(c) administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure).

(d) administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

(e) administer first aid to a casualty who is choking.

(f) administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding.

(g) administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock.

(h) provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries.

  • Minor conditions, including minor cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns & scalds, small splinters.
  • Contents of first aid kits.
  • Avoiding cross infection.
  • Reporting and aftercare.
  • The unconscious casualty.
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
  • Choking.
  • Blood loss and shock.

Duration: 1 day

Course materials

Course materials appropriate to the course content will be provided at the time of the course.


Students must attend all sessions to be eligible for assessment.  Assessment is by continuous assessment throughout the course, there is no final examination. Practical skills and knowledge are assessed by undertaking scenarios and answering oral questions.

Those students who complete the course and are deemed to have reached the required standard are issued with a certificate that is valid for three years.

Certification for the Emergency First Aid at Work course is valid for a period of 3 years.  To maintain the qualification a further Emergency First Aid at Work course, certification valid for a further 3 years will be issued to delegates that successfully complete the course and assessments.

You can study by attending a classroom course, involving face-to-face teaching, at one of out trusted partner’s venues or they can be organised as an in-house course in your premises if you have a number of students who need this qualification.  We have a method of study that suits availability and commitments.
