E-learning courses are a great option for those who prefer to study at their own pace, and fit their studies around other commitments.
One of ACT’s most popular e-learning courses is the IOSH Managing Safely – a leading health and safety qualification that’s relevant to any sector or industry, and applicable to any country around the world. ACT caught up with Nicola Robinson, who recently achieved her IOSH Managing Safely qualification with our e-learning course, to find out more about her experience and how she plans to use her new knowledge in her job role.
Why did you choose the IOSH Managing Safely?
I’ve recently been promoted to Facilities Co-ordinator in the world of Corporate Real Estate and my manager was keen for me to look at any training I felt I needed. IOSH Managing Safely felt like the best first step as it covers so much such as assessing risk, understanding responsibilities, looking at hazards and measuring performance amongst other things.
What made you choose e-learning over other learning methods?
E-learning can be done in your own time when it suits you, this always appeals to me. I find classroom settings can be more distracting.
What is your current job role and what does it involve?
I’m a Facilities Co-ordinator and I work within a team that look after a 3-building campus where I am based as well as buildings in our international territories. We look after the catering team, housekeepers and security personnel as well as the safety of the staff who work within the buildings.
How do you plan to use your new knowledge in your day-to-day responsibilities within your role?
I now have a greater understanding of the risks and hazards that can occur daily so I can now apply this knowledge to all aspects of my day and work.
What advice would you give others considering studying for their IOSH Managing Safely qualification?
If you decide to go down the e-learning route, set yourself time aside to read through all the information and slides, watch the videos and take notes. Go back over the information if you are unsure of anything. When it comes to the exam, again set yourself some time aside in a quiet room as the exam is time limited.
What were some of the challenges you faced in your studies?
My main challenge was of my own making, I found it difficult to set myself time aside out of my working day but then I decided to book time in my calendar each week for an hour or two at least.
How did you approach the balance of your career, your studies, and your personal life?
It isn’t always easy; some weeks are busier than others and I wasn’t always able to do any study that week but then I would try to book in extra time the following week to catch up.
What do you hope to have achieved in the next 5 years?
I hope to carry on learning more and do further training to enhance my career and support my workplace to be the safest it can be.
Do you have any final thoughts to share on your journey?
If anyone is thinking about taking this course I would encourage them to do it, some parts are easier than others but it is a really interesting course to take.
