National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) are a great alternative to exam-based courses. They give you credit for your skills, what you have already put into practice within your workplace, and don’t rely on exams to measure your competence.
The City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is an established qualification for those who are working in a health and safety role. The qualification is suitable for people from all sectors of work and is ideal if you are responsible for developing and applying health & safety procedures day-to-day within your organisation or on behalf of another organisation.
Why do an NVQ?
- Work based assessments means less time off work
- You can get credit for your skills
- Apply the knowledge to your work as you progress
- You cannot fail an NVQ, your work can be improved and re-submitted
- No exams
- The Level 5 NVQ is an equivalent qualification to the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety

The time that it takes to complete the Level 5 NVQ Diploma will depend on your experience, the work that you have already completed and evidenced and the time that you have available to complete the units. You can work at a pace that suits your abilities and commitments, with the typical completion time being around 6 to 12 months.
The NVQ allows for a lot more flexibility with balancing work and home life commitments, there are no set classroom dates to attend, evidence can be uploaded at any time, and you can progress through the qualification as you work.
There are no examinations with this qualification and it is therefore not possible to fail. Candidates are either “competent” or “not yet competent”. Assessment of performance is made by consideration of the results of work-based activities that have been submitted to meet each unit’s assessment criteria.
Throughout the course you can upload your evidence to the online personal portfolio, this will allow you to demonstrate understanding and application of skills to meet the assessment criteria.
Further to this, you will present your evidence to your assessor during planned assessment periods.
Your assessor will then determine the extent to which your evidence confirms completion of the assessment criteria, and provide you with feedback. Feedback is provided for each unit and work to meet the criteria can be re-submitted with changes until successful completion.
Our e-portfolio system allows you to provide evidence from anywhere, at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Using our e-portfolio means secure storage of evidence with no bulky paper-based portfolios to manage, store or send through the post. Our e-portfolio system enables clear and easy communication between you and your assessor.
Depending on your location within the UK, there may be additional charges to carry out a mandatory workplace observation and assessment of evidence.
The City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma, with the addition of the professional development and ethics unit, is recognised as meeting the requirements for Graduate membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), providing a progression path to Chartered membership of IOSH (CMIOSH). It is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM).
I chose the NVQ to allow me to fit the study around my work, I liked the fact that I could study at home at my own pace. It was great not having any exams, and being able to utilise what I had already done at work, or work that I was creating as evidence for my course. The support that I received was of a high standard both verbally over the phone, and via the online portal. I completed the course in 10 months and I will be enrolling with ACT on the NEBOSH Fire Course shortly.
