NEBOSH vs IOSH – What are the differences?

General Safety By Matthew Coombes

ACT have been delivering both IOSH and NEBOSH training since 1991, but what is the difference between these two prestigious organisations?

IOSH

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) are a globally reaching membership organisation and awarding body for the field of health and safety. IOSH is the largest membership body for health and safety professionals, and is comprised of members from across the world at all stages in their career. They provide information, research and networking to members, industries and even governments.

IOSH Membership

The members that make up IOSH are an integral part of their organisation and many health and safety professionals aspire to achieve chartered membership (CMIOSH).

You can join IOSH as a member at any stage of your career in occupational health and safety, and membership levels are based on experience, competency, qualifications and a continued professional development profile.

You may already be aware of IOSH membership if you’ve seen the post-nominals, Tech IOSH, Grad IOSH, CM IOSH and CFIOSH on people’s email signatures and LinkedIn profiles.

Membership also provides access to IOSH magazine, mentoring, career information, professional support phone lines, and the ability to progress through their membership framework and display conformity to IOSH criteria.

IOSH Qualifications

IOSH qualifications are ideal for any organisation who hasn’t got a clue where to start when it comes to health and safety, or any organisation looking to provide training and essential skills to their employees. Whether a new start-up, a restaurant, an office or a multinational, there’s something for anyone looking to make improvements when it comes to health and safety.

The most popular IOSH qualifications that ACT offer are the IOSH Working Safely, IOSH Managing Safely and IOSH Safety for Executives and directors. Each of these qualifications is applicable to any organisation across the world and they’re frequently chosen for in-house training programmes.

IOSH training courses are quality assured by IOSH, meaning that both the syllabi created by IOSH and the materials and teaching by ACT are regularly checked to ensure that they meet IOSH’s high standards and expectations.

NEBOSH

National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) are a global organisation who provide accreditation and qualifications for health and safety training.

NEBOSH qualifications are known across the world for the knowledge and practical skills that you can develop from undertaking NEBOSH training with an approved centre like ourselves. They are highly sought after for prospective job applications and a NEBOSH qualification can change your career.

NEBOSH qualifications cover a wide range of topics and levels including:

  • Awareness – Essential information for any worker
  • One day skills – Specific skills for specific jobs
  • Management – Management qualifications for controlling specific risks
  • Senior Leadership – Training specifically designed for senior leadership
  • Diploma – Degree level training in OH&S

We’ve been delivering NEBOSH training in the classroom since 1991, and have a large suite of public, in-house, virtually delivered and self-directed e-learning NEBOSH training programmes.

NEBOSH qualification frameworks, syllabi and materials are all based on research, best practice and provide both knowledge and practical skills which help to produce a knowledgeable and efficient employee.

As a NEBOSH learning partner, we have to adapt any syllabus or materials provided by NEBOSH in order to turn it into an engaging and interactive training experience that is suitable for providing a means to develop new and essential skills, and also to pass NEBOSH examinations in order to achieve certification for that course.

The NEBOSH learning partner programme

ACT are a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner. This means that we excel in 6 key areas that NEBOSH have included as part of their accreditation and quality management processes.

  1. Ensuring that learners know what they’re signing up for and what to expect from their training
  2. Creating an engaging learning environment which encourages interaction
  3. Providing accurate course materials and keeping them up to date
  4. Ensuring that tutors are both fully qualified and competent to deliver engaging training
  5. Providing learners with feedback on their progress and providing support
  6. Measuring our performance in delivering training and ensuring that our training is high quality

ACT’s expert tutors adapt all of our materials and help to keep them up to date. Each tutor has their own way of delivering the training that suits their teaching style.
We work collaboratively with our sister company RMS Publishing to produce full, professionally printed study books for our training courses which are provided to any classroom or live virtual learners free of charge.

Collaborations

NEBOSH have multiple collaborative qualifications created in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive and more recently, the NEBOSH IIRSM Certificate in Manging Risks.
