ACT, specialists in health and safety
In April 1991, the company ACT Associates Ltd was formed in Stourbridge in the West Midlands by Ian Coombes who remains the Managing Director of the organisation. ACT was created to provide a single point solution for organisations that were looking to improve their health and safety, and offered Audits, Consultancy and Training.
When the company was first created, there was a dire need for action to improve health and safety performance in organisations of all shapes and sizes throughout the UK. Over the years we have done our part along with countless other professionals and organisations to improve health and safety throughout the UK.
From our small beginnings in the Midlands, we have grown to provide training and services throughout the UK and across the world. Our partnership with our sister company RMS Publishing has seen ACT co-author materials distributed to health and safety trainers and professionals working in all sectors to provide valuable study aids and resources.
Now in 2021, ACT specialise in providing high quality health and safety training.
We offer a wide variety of qualifications from multiple awarding bodies including:
- NEBOSH
- CITY & Guilds
- IOSH
- iAS
- CITB
- ECITB

NEBOSH:
ACT have been offering the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety for 30 Years. Much like the IOSH Managing Safely, the NEBOSH General Certificate has remained central to the courses that we provide our learners, it provides an excellent set of knowledge and skills, and has been used to develop careers in health and safety by thousands of people.
We are proud to be a NEBOSH Gold Standard Learning Partner, and NEBOSH had the following to say on our 30 years of health and safety training:
“We send our congratulations to ACT on reaching this important and impressive anniversary! We are delighted that throughout its 30 years, ACT has chosen to offer NEBOSH qualifications. ACT hold NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner status, which recognises the quality teaching and support it’s team provides to learners. I am sure that it is no exaggeration to say that over the last 30 years ACT have helped 1,000s develop the skills necessary to have a successful health and safety career.”

City and Guilds
Through the awarding body City & Guilds we are able to offer National Vocational Qualifications such as our NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Practice, and NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice. NVQs enable you to get credit for your work and are a great way to develop a successful career in health and safety while working in the field. Our relationship with City & Guilds has enabled us to provide learners across the UK with an opportunity to develop key health and safety skills that they need to excel in their careers.
IOSH
IOSH are the only chartered body for occupational safety and health, and we have been working alongside them for 30 years.
The IOSH Managing Safely® training course was one of the first courses that ACT started delivering in 1991 The course has been consistently updated throughout the years and is now one of the best possible qualifications for a manager, team leader or supervisor that needs to develop their understanding of health and safety. We’re proud to have worked with IOSH for so long and have helped thousands of people to complete their Managing Safely® qualification.
Our director Ian Coombes had the following to say about our relationship with IOSH:
“From its inception 30 years ago, ACT has helped organisations to effectively manage health and safety. An important part of this has been to enable managers to learn how they can contribute to this, which is why we have been providing IOSH courses like Managing Safely tm throughout this time. Our relationship with IOSH over the 30 years has been as a valuable asset and we are proud to have influenced the development of a wide range of well-known organisations by using the IOSH Managing Safely tm course to enable their managers to support health and safety, making a difference to a great many lives.”
iAS, the International Accreditation Society:
iAS have enabled us to create accredited training programmes for areas that have previously not been covered in health and safety, such as auditor skills and awareness of important health and safety standards. It has been a great way for the organisation to develop and deliver health and safety training courses that are more specialist or specific than others on the market, in order to certify people for developing important skills.
CITB:
CITB is the training board for the construction industry in the UK. CITB work directly with the construction industry to ensure that their qualifications are suitable to the needs of the modern workplace, and our CITB training has helped many workers, managers and supervisors to gain the qualifications that they need to improve the safety of their workplace.
ECITB:
The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board is the skills, standards and qualifications body for the engineering construction workforce of Great Britain. We have been offering Client Contractor National Safety Group (CCNSG) Safety Passport courses for many years, and have been helping workers in the engineering construction sector to get on site with the health and safety knowledge that they need to work safely.
