IEMA Associate Certificate In Environmental Management

A globally recognised environmental qualification that provides IEMA Associate membership.

The significance of environmental issues and their impacts on all things in the world is without doubt.  As this significance grows and workplaces become more complex more organisations are focusing on the prevention and control of environmental impacts.  It is necessary to develop the competence of those that contribute to the management of environmental sustainability.  This course provides an excellent basis for those that wish to make a difference to environmental matters.

The course covers the important areas of management of environmental issues, water, air and land impacts and assessment, environmental management systems, legal standards and best practice.  Ensuring students appreciate the environmental issues related to their work processes and develop and understanding of how to manage them.

This course covers all the areas of knowledge an individual requires to become an Associate IEMA member.  Once successfully completed students become an IEMA Associate member.

Designed for

The IEMA Associate Certificate in Environmental Management is suitable for anyone who has an interest in or responsibilities for environmental matters.  There are no pre-requisites for attending this course and no prior knowledge of environmental matters is required.  This will include:

  • Those involved in environmental improvements programmes and/or environmental management systems who wish to obtain a recognised environmental qualification
  • Those that wish to achieve Associate Membership of IEMA.
  • Managers and environmental practitioners.
  • This course is particularly suitable for those wishing to broaden their qualifications and experience from other disciplines, such as quality or health and safety.

Aims and Objectives

The IEMA Associate Certificate in Environmental Management is designed to raise the professional competence of environmental practitioners, covering environmental sustainability, assessment, interpretation and management of environmental performance and environmental legislation.

On successful completion of the course, students will:

  • Understand environmental and sustainability principles.
  • Understand environmental policy issues.
  • Understand key environmental legislation and compliance measures.
  • Understand environmental management and sustainable development in a business context.
  • Be able to collect, analyse and report on environmental information and data.
  • Be able to apply environmental management and assessment tools.
  • Be able to analyse problems and opportunities to deliver sustainable solutions.
  • Be able to develop and implement programmes to deliver environmental performance improvement.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Be able to influence behaviour and implement change to improve sustainability.

Content

The programme covers the following topics:

  • Main natural cycles and ecological systems, including the main ecosystem services.
  • Both global and local environmental issues evolve, and why and how they relate to the management of an organisation.
  • The impacts of societal activities on the earth’s natural systems in general terms.
  • Pollution sources, pathways and receptors.
  • Effects of climate change.
  • Biodiversity, ecological stability and sustainability.
  • Principles of environmental policy, including polluter pays and lifecycle thinking.
  • Policy instruments, for example fiscal and legislative.
  • Structure and content of environmental policies.
  • Types and sources of environmental law.
  • Environmental legislation and penalties.
  • Environmental regulators.
  • Risks and measures to manage environmental risks.
  • Practical ways in which an organisation can both strategically and operationally reduce its impacts.
  • Environmental business case, corporate responsibility.
  • The inter-relationships of the environmental, economic, social and ethical aspects of ecological processes and systems.
  • Organisational value chain.
  • Environmental information and data.
  • Environmental management and assessment tools, including the main key elements of an environmental management system, impact assessment and auditing.
  • Sustainability problems and solutions.
  • Environmental improvement programmes.
  • Communication with stakeholders, their needs and environmental reporting.

Assessment

Student’s knowledge and understanding of the course is tested through one written 2.5 hr examination, taken on completion of study, last day of the course.  Once successfully completed students become an IEMA Associate member.

Classroom based taught courses

The IEMA Associate Certificate in Environmental Management award involves attendance at two one week study periods (10 Days).

You can study by attending a classroom course, involving face-to-face teaching, at our Midlands venue or we can provide similar courses at your premises through our in-house services if you have a number of students who need this qualification.  We have a method of study that suits your availability and commitments.

We work with our trusted partners the International HSE Council to deliver this IEMA approved course.

Fees

Fees:  £1,545 + VAT + IEMA fees

The IEMA membership fee is mandatory and covers the first year of membership.
