Outline

The iAS Auditor/Lead Auditor OHSAS 18001 course will equip students with an in-depth knowledge of auditing OH&S management systems to third party standards, in particular BS OHSAS 18001.  It will provide OH&S practitioners and systems auditors with the understanding and skills necessary to professionally assess the conformance of an OH&S management system with BS OHSAS 18001 at an internal level, supplier assessment or an independent 3rd Party level.

This highly participative auditor/lead auditor course is a practically based series of sessions using tutorials, exercises, case studies and open discussions.  The practical emphasis of the course and the high tutor to student ratio provide a unique opportunity for a substantial degree of individual participation, guidance and training.  The course focuses on developing auditor skills, techniques and competence related to auditing BS OHSAS 18001 management systems.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is to enable those who are tasked with performing or leading an audit team to perform audits of occupational health and safety management systems against BS OHSAS 18001 in accordance with the principles established in ISO 19011 “Guidelines for Management System Auditing”. 

On completion of the programme students will be able to:

  • Interpret the audit implications of BS OHSAS 18001 and explain the benefits of OH&S management system audits.
  • Select team members and coordinate the team activities.
  • Take the lead at opening and closing meetings.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of occupation health and safety management systems auditing terminology.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the audit process including planning, conducting and reporting.
  • Carry out audits in accordance with the principles established in ISO 19011 “Guidelines for Management System Auditing”. 
  • Conduct audit interviews, observe processes and examine documents to obtain objective evidence about the status of the system.
  • Prepare and present verbal and written audit reports.
  • Determine nonconformities and allocate major or minor criteria.

Decide upon an appropriate follow-up audit.

Introduction to audit and overview of OHSAS 18001 including:

  • Important definitions for auditors.
  • The purpose of auditing.
  • The role of the auditor.
  • The audit as part of a management system.
  • The clauses of OHSAS 18001:2007.

The importance of risk assessment in the audit process including:

  • Review of hazard identification and risk assessment.
  • The importance of risk for OHSAS 18001 auditors in determining an audit plan.

Audit planning and auditor responsibilities including:

  • Audit skills.
  • Identifying question sets.
  • How to plan an audit.
  • Reporting outcomes.

Auditing in practice including:

  • Different types of audit.
  • Role of the auditor / lead auditor.
  • Practical audit planning.
  • Use of working documents for auditing.
  • Assigning roles to a team.
  • Interview and collecting data.
  • Preparing and delivering reports and findings.
  • The issue of nonconformity.
  • Close out meetings.
  • Writing an audit report.

Assessment

In order to attain the iAS Auditor / Lead Auditor OHSAS 18001 Certificate learning is assessed by continuous assessment and written assessments.  The written assessment comprises:

Paper 1 - Audit principles.

Paper 2 - Conducting audits to OHSAS 18001. 

Access to a copy of BS OHSAS 18001, course notes and personal notes made during the course is allowed. 

Successful students will be awarded the iAS Auditor/Lead Auditor OHSAS 18001 Certificate to recognise their achievement and a licence card containing their photograph. 

Conversion course

iAS OHSAS 18001 Auditor / Lead Auditor Conversion Course 

This 2 day conversion course is for those who have successfully completed a recognised assessed programme of study that covered the principles of auditing, in particular:

• iAS Certificate in Safety Programme Auditing.

• Lead auditor course of 5 days duration relating to BS EN ISO 9001 or BS EN ISO 14001. Other courses may also be exempt.

This course is intended to add to prior learning to enable successful students to conduct the role of OHSAS 18001 Auditor/Lead Auditor by providing the following additional knowledge and skills:

  • Auditing for compliance against BS OHSAS 18001.
  • Leading an audit team.
  • Identifying and recording non-conformities against BS OHSAS 18001.

Students are expected to have a basic understanding of health and safety and will find possession of outline knowledge of BS OHSAS 18001:2007 helpful. 

Learning related to this Conversion course is assessed by continuous assessment and written assessment (Paper 2 of the iAS Auditor/Lead Auditor OHSAS 18001 award – “Conducting audits to OHSAS 18001”).  Students accepted for assessment will have obtained an exemption from Paper 1 - “Audit principles” of the iAS Auditor/Lead Auditor OHSAS 18001 award.  Access to a copy of BS OHSAS 18001, course notes and personal notes made during the course is allowed. 

Successful students will be awarded the iAS Auditor/Lead Auditor OHSAS 18001 Certificate to recognise their achievement and a licence card containing their photograph.
