OHSAS 18001 Implementation and Audit

The Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series OHSAS 18001 is an established standard and is recognised internationally as an appropriate approach to the management of health and safety issues in the workplace.  The introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act (CMCH) 2007 in the UK has provided a fresh impetus to establishing effective systems.

“An organisation is guilty of an offence ….. If the way in which its activities are managed or organised by its senior management is a substantial element in the breach…..”
Source: Section 1.3 CMCH 2007

The implementation of a more formal, structured approach to health and safety may be an organisation’s first step into management systems.  Legal, good practice and customer expectations are making health and safety an important aspect of an organisation’s operations, which should benefit from a systems approach to its management.

OHSAS 18001 encourages organisations to identify and establish risk control management systems to reduce the likelihood of loss to the organisation and others affected by its operations. This provides an opportunity for continuous improvement through senior management review and may assist with a defence in personal or corporate prosecutions.

Two OHSAS 18001 implementation options are available:

  • Establish a stand alone system, designed by us to meet OHSAS 18001.
  • We help you create an integrated system with other established systems, such as quality, ISO 9001 , and environmental, ISO 14001, systems.

A dedicated consultant will undertake an initial review/gap analysis to obtain a perspective of the current health and safety conformity within your organisation.  This will be conducted against the Occupational Health Safety Assessment Series management system standard (OHSAS 18001).  Our consultants have many years experience in the effective analysis and development of health and safety management systems.

The initial review/gap analysis will include an evaluation:

  • Of the current management approach/systems adopted by your organisation
  • Across all areas of health and safety management, including conformity with the OHSAS 18001 standard and significant issues relating to compliance with legislation.

Building on the findings of the review, a focussed implementation strategy will be developed, incorporating a prioritised action list for any non-conforming areas identified by the review.  Typically an implementation strategy will include:

  • Production and refinement of policies and procedures
  • Development of risk based approach and rollout using key personnel
  • Embedding of management system into the organisation
  • Focussed training across all relevant areas to ensure the management system is adopted
  • Employee handbook development
  • Performance monitoring and reporting
