Health and safety in the workplace is one of the most important factors in the modern workplace, and if the people operating in an industry are well trained in good work practices it is for the benefit of every one involved. That need for the workforce to be aware can come from a range of sources, and to provide good training there is the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) courses which bring all their expertise to employees. They provide information on all aspects of health and safety and can award the NEBOSH diploma which is seen as an industry standard.
The organisation, which started out in 1979 has charitable status, but at its heart there is the wealth of expertise and experience from people who have seen all the changes in safety issues in all industries. The NEBOSH courses are regarded as second to none with some 450 course providers passing on their knowledge to 30,000 candidates every year. There s a whole stack of accreditations from the various bodies who assess a training outfit and those go from ISO accreditation to the countries top qualifications panel. For the employer and the employee who has gained the NEBOSH certificate, that is great, but that extra knowledge gained on the course is the main thing.

There is plenty of information in the web pages about the various options for those looking to attend a NEBOSH general course. It also has different category guides for industry and the types of course available. The guides are all available as a pdf download so the person going on a course can be well prepared beforehand. This is useful as a handout for new employees, who can be booked onto the full training course later on. Obviously there are general health and safety rules, but each industry has its own potential dangers. As such there are courses and guides to those involved in the power and gas industries as well as those looking for a certificate in the NEBOSH construction aspects of safety.
In some industries there is an existing health and safety culture which has been developed over the years with the help of NEBOSH exams. Those in the oil and gas industries know only too well what lies beneath their feet, and a power worker will understand the potential for disaster if a high pressure steam pipe blows. These are the most dangerous places to work, but the office worker who sits in the air conditioned work place every day may feel immune from that kind of thing. It is true, but there are still hidden dangers in every workplace, so being aware is all important. Having attended a course which leads to a NEBOSH cert, the worker will have evidence that they have learnt all about safety in their work place. The slippy floor or the loose wires can be hazards which can be dealt with if someone is aware enough to bring it to the attention of a manager. Then there are the managers themselves who have a responsibility to make staff safety conscious. They will have been on a NEBOSH safety course, so they should be the most aware. So when it comes to the well being of staff in all industries from the heavy and potentially dangerous occupations to the quietly run office, there are always improvements which can be made. Those involved in the safety NEBOSH courses are those who will have grown with the H&S culture to the extent they can be a course provider.
Course providers are people who have possibly been in the development of quality assurance programs in their specialised industry, so the bottom line is - they know what they are talking about! Most are Chartered Safety and Health Practitioners in their industry and that does give then the credentials to advise on the safety issues which govern the workforce of the UK. The NEBOSH general cert is one of the qualifications which are assessed by external assessors, so there is not only the guidance the diploma NEBOSH has to offer, but also a confirmation from an outside body. In truth, this is an issue where there cannot be any grey areas – the consequences are too dire, and if put into financial terms a company does not want to be at the end of a law suit because of poor working practices. It is much better to have the staff attend a course and gain the NEBOSH dip, which is evidence of safety awareness. As we have mentioned some industries are more susceptible to work injuries than others and that aspect cannot be ignored. It would be wrong to suggest that the person who has been on the construction NEBOSH course will never fall off the scaffolding. However that kind of accident can be avoided to some extent, so it is a case of lessening the odds through basic good practice.
